Why this exists

Boats generate enormous amounts of information — instrument data on the bus, a shelf of manuals, a survey nobody reads twice, the accumulated folk knowledge of everyone who's ever fixed something aboard. Almost all of it is invisible exactly when you need it: at anchor with a dying battery bank, mid-passage with a warm engine, at the dock trying to remember what the surveyor said about the keel bolts.

Modern language models can finally hold all of that at once and answer like a knowledgeable crew member. But the obvious way to build it — an app talking to someone's cloud — fails the only test that matters: it has to work offshore, where there is no cloud. So we built the unreasonable version instead: a computer that lives on the boat and carries the intelligence with it.

What we believe

Offshore is the spec. If a feature needs the internet to work, it's a convenience, not a capability. Everything that matters runs aboard.

Your boat's data belongs on your boat. We designed the system so your data lives on the boat, on hardware you own — not in our cloud. Companies change; architecture is forever.

Good tools earn trust slowly. A watch that cries wolf gets ignored, and an assistant that guesses gets people in trouble. Vela shows its sources and its readings, so you can check its work.

The name

Every good story on the water starts the same way: you leave port. It's the moment the lines come off the dock and the boat — and everyone on it — has to stand on its own. That's the moment we build for.
